Oven Temperature Problems: Causes and Fixes

Baking at the wrong temperature leads to burned or undercooked food. If your oven isn't reaching the right temperature, here are the most likely causes.

Electric Oven Not Heating

1. Failed Bake Element

The bake element is the heating coil at the bottom of the oven. When it fails, it may show visible damage — blistering, cracking, or a break in the coil. It should glow red when working. Replacing it is typically a simple DIY job involving two screws and a wire connector.

2. Failed Broil Element

The broil element at the top of the oven also contributes to heating during baking on some models. If it's damaged, the oven may heat unevenly or not reach the set temperature.

Gas Oven Not Heating

3. Faulty Igniter

The igniter is the most commonly replaced part on a gas oven. It draws electrical current to open the gas valve and then lights the gas. When an igniter weakens, it may glow but not get hot enough to open the gas valve. If your oven takes a long time to preheat or doesn't heat at all, the igniter is the likely culprit.

4. Gas Safety Valve Issues

The gas safety valve works with the igniter to regulate gas flow. While less common than igniter failure, a faulty safety valve will prevent gas from reaching the burner.

5. Faulty Oven Temperature Sensor

The temperature sensor (also called an oven probe or RTD sensor) monitors the oven temperature and sends data to the control board. If it's faulty, the oven may not heat to the correct temperature. You can test the sensor with a multimeter — it should read about 1080 ohms at room temperature.

6. Control Board Problems

The electronic control board regulates the oven functions. If the relay on the board that controls the heating elements fails, the oven won't heat. However, always check the simpler parts first before diagnosing a control board issue.

How to Calibrate Your Oven Temperature

  1. Place an oven thermometer in the center of the oven
  2. Set the oven to 350°F and let it preheat fully
  3. Check the thermometer after 20 minutes
  4. If off by more than 25°F, recalibrate using your oven's settings menu or consider replacing the temperature sensor
