How to Fix a Dryer That Won't Start
Dryer Won't Start? Here's What to Check
You load your clothes, close the door, press start… and nothing. A dryer that won't start is a common problem, but the fix is usually straightforward.
Top Causes of a Dryer That Won't Start
1. Faulty Door Switch
The door switch tells the dryer that the door is securely closed. If the switch is broken, the dryer thinks the door is open and won't start. You can usually hear a click when pressing the door switch — if there's no click, it's likely bad.
2. Broken Start Switch
The start switch itself can wear out over time. If you hear a humming sound when pressing start but the dryer doesn't tumble, the start switch may be the issue.
3. Blown Thermal Fuse
On some dryer models, a blown thermal fuse will prevent the dryer from starting entirely, not just from heating. Check the thermal fuse for continuity with a multimeter.
4. Defective Drive Motor
The drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel. If the motor has burned out, the dryer won't start at all. Sometimes a humming noise indicates a seized motor.
5. Broken Drive Belt
Many dryers have a belt switch that prevents the dryer from running if the belt is broken. Check if your dryer belt is intact by opening the door and trying to turn the drum by hand — if it spins very easily, the belt is likely broken.
Quick Troubleshooting Steps
- Check that the dryer is plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn't tripped
- Make sure the door closes firmly and latches
- Listen for any sounds when pressing start (humming, clicking, nothing)
- Check the thermal fuse with a multimeter
- Inspect the drive belt
